HOME SWEET HOME

Well most of you understand that I have been traveling a lot in the past few months.  Back and forth to Nashville for recording either new music or the TV show iShine Knect, season 4.  Honestly, it's been a major commitment of time. I've had to spend a lot of time making up homework from school and also making up lost sleep.

I'm now home for at least a month before I have to travel again.

The new year we start planning for the February/March tour with iShine and I may have a trip or two to California somewhere in there.

I love what I'm doing, but it does take a lot of energy and I don't get to sleep as much as I'd like to.

We've been working hard on my new music and some new music videos and I hope you all like them.  Be sure to share them with your friends and family.

I appreciate everyone who continues to believe in what I'm doing.

BULLYING - or - BEING KIND

Well, this current OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO shoot for my new song "ONE OF THE KIND" will be my 5th major shoot, but like my 15th music video overall.

We spent this past Sunday filming inside my high school for a few scenes in the video.  I wrote this song to talk about a way to battle bullying... by being KIND to people.

Some of the lyrics are:

Pushed Down
To the ground
It's like nobody cares
She's thinking to herself
"Is anybody out there"
Outcast, no friends
Can she make it through
Just another day alone
No one to talk to

(so whatcha gonna do)
You can keep on walkin
Leave her to herself
It's not your problem anyway
(watcha gonna do)
You need to level out your pride
You should be ONE OF THE KIND

Everybody needs someone to talk to, talk to
Why can't it be you?
(you should be one of the kind)
Everybody needs someone to hear them, to see them, to free them
One of the kind

I know that the hardest part of bullying against me has been the mean rumors, insults, and groups of guys making fun of me for being a singer.  BLOCKED calls to my cell phone with guys calling me bad names or calling me a GIRL because I choose to sing. Threats to be beat up and being made fun of for having a standard of purity until marriage has all been difficult. Some people find it hard to believe I've been bullied because they think that if you can do something like singing or playing sports, that you must not have to deal with it. But I've learned that anyone can be a target of bullying. I'm not talking about goofing around insults between friends. I mean finding out that you're being laughed at by both guys and girls who are supposed to be your friends, but would rather say mean things to me and about me when I'm not around. It can be lonely and hard.

I do have a relationship with God and that has helped me overcome a lot of the tough times. I also have great parents and cousins who are my best friends, so it has helped me to not feel so alone.

This song hopefully will help all of us know how important it is to be KIND to others and if we ALL choose to be KIND, then we can be "ONE OF THE KIND".

We continue filming this coming weekend and hope to have the video released on my youtube channel by December 15.

If you have a story about being bullied, please send me an email and I'd love to talk to you about it.

My Music Videos

I've been making simple videos of me singing cover songs and official music videos of my original music and posting them to my youtube channel since May 2011.

When I film new music videos, it's usually done around my hometown here in Indiana.  My first official music video "BEST FRIENDS" was actually filmed in four different cities within an hour of my house.  Since then, we've filmed them pretty much in my town and the video KNOWING was actually filmed inside my own house for a few scenes.

I'm going to be filming two more music videos in Indiana which will be released in December 2012 on my youtube channel.  One will be of a Christmas song I'm covering and the other is the release of one of my new original songs from my new EP coming out in 2013.

The song is called ONE OF THE KIND and I'm really excited about the video shoot for it.  The song is very upbeat and I really think people will like it.  It was produced by Grammy winner, Jeff Savage, and I really think it will connect with a lot of kids who are going through a tough time with being bullied or hurting because of a home situation.

I've asked for people to volunteer to be an EXTRA in this video and hope we can get as many as possible to be a part of it.

We will be filming on December 2 and December 9 (Sundays) near my hometown of Kendallville, Indiana.

If you know anyone who wants to be an extra in the video, please have them email me at spencer@spencerkanemusic.com for information about it.

A Day in My Life

Sometimes I get asked about why I don't respond to messages or am not on Skype as much as I want to be.  So, I figured I'd share how I spend my days.

SCHOOL:

Ok. So I go to a public high school and I'm in 10th grade.  I take AP classes to prepare for college, so my homework load can get pretty heavy at times.  I have to take these classes if I expect to get into a college after I graduate high school.  I would like to play basketball in college if I can, so it's even more important for my grades to be high so I can be considered for scholarships for education as well as sport.  The school I attend is in the next county, so I have to travel about 25 minutes one way to get there each morning.  I don't ride a bus unless I go to my cousin's house after school sometimes. My cousin and I are the same grade and we have a few classes together.

When I travel for music, I miss school days. So I have to take homework with me when I travel or make up homework when I get back.

SPORTS:

I have been playing basketball since age 4 and baseball since age 7.  Until 2012, I played both school sports and travel sports. I was on a travel basketball and baseball team and went to a lot of tournaments and played a lot of games away from my hometown and in other states. So I've always traveled for at least sports, and now music.  However, now that music is taking more of my time, I stopped playing travel basketball and baseball starting this new school year. In fact, I won't be playing baseball for travel or school. So, I've chosen to just focus on basketball.  I will play travel basketball again after the school season and through the summer when I'm not doing music stuff.

So, basketball season isn't about just practices and games at school 6 days a week. I also have personal workouts at my local YMCA and do my own strength and conditioning year round. I lift weights, run, do speed and agility workouts and play scrimmages year round for basketball.  So, sports is a big part of what I do all year round and basketball is something I can play indoors no matter what the weather is like.

I have been contacted by several colleges already about playing basketball for them and have no formal offers yet (I'm only a sophomore). But I hope to see some offers happening after this season.

HOME:

I still have to do my part of chores around home, so that takes time every day and on weekends. I do laundry, clean the kitchen, mow the yard, vacuum, and pretty much whatever else needs to be done between my mom and dad and I.  I cook sometimes too, so that takes time.

PERSONAL TIME:

Aside from chilling in the MAN CAVE (our basement), I hang with friends once in a while when I have time. I also spend some time doing bible study stuff with my family.  I try to have time to go to school dances or other social events when I can.  I play XBOX with friends online too.  I have a dog and we hang out every day.  I have no brothers or sisters, so it's pretty much just mom and dad and I and my dog. I only text a few people I know from my school and area... so even texting isn't very often.

MUSIC:

This is the most involved part of my life next to sports and school.  I practice new songs at home, record some at home, and of course, have to keep the travel schedule to record in Nashville and do the TV show with iShine when we're recording there. I also have to take time to do VLOGS on my youtube channel.  Besides that, I tweet, answer facebook messages and try to spend time SKYPING with friends and fans. Then there's the interviews from time to time, performances, and song writing that takes focus and time to do. It's a lot.

JOB:

I also work for my dad's marketing company. I am a production assistant for him when he has photography clients or video projects.  I basically lug around the equipment and set up lights and things like that. Once in a while he lets me run a camera, but mostly I just plug in cords, run wires, and stuff like that. I get paid for this so I can have some spending money.

So, as you can see, it's like every minute of every day, 7 days a week, I'm doing something. So, sorry if some of you don't understand why I can't reply so quick, but hopefully you do now.

My 6 New Songs

I just returned from Nashville this past week after a great week before that in the Dominican Republic.  One of the questions I get from a lot of fans is when I am going to have new songs posted.  We have been recording completely new songs (6 total) that will be released in the coming months. But the process hasn't been easy.  I've had to travel 8 hours one way each time to record in Nashville.  It takes several days in the studio to record vocals for new music and I have to take breaks so my voice doesn't get overworked. So it takes a lot of work.  But it starts with writing new music.

Writing new music is both easy and hard at the same time.

There are usually two ways to make new music (maybe a third).  If you play an instrument, you can make the melodies and then either write your lyrics or have someone help you write the lyrics.  Or, you can write lyrics and try to make music to match it.  Or, you can find music you like and write lyrics to that.

I like to have music to write lyrics to.  For me, it's easier to hear the vibe of the music and then know what to write for lyrics.  But that isn't always possible for me because I don't play guitar and when I play piano, I don't have the ability to create full music tracks. So, I have to work with producers and musicians to help me finish completing a song.

For example, my latest song I WANT THAT, I actually wrote the lyrics in a few hours and then worked with my producer in New York (The Ground Above) and gave him some piano chord progressions to use as a reference to make the music track for my lyrics.  Then, he created a basic track and we worked together to tweak the lyrics and the music until we got what we think sounds best.

When I've worked in Nashville these past few months, I've been working with Grammy Award winning and Gold and Platinum album winning producers who have been making music for a long time with a lot of artists.  They are teaching me a lot about the process of making new music.  Some of it I understood already, and a lot of it is completely new to me.

I'm excited to get my new music we've been recording in Nashville released so my fans can hear it.  It's been a lot of hard work, but the music and lyrics are the best I've made so far and I think my fans will be happy.

Meeting Fans

I think that what is most amazing to me is the fan support I get online and at my performances.  It's very humbling to know that something I enjoy doing makes so many people happy.  I had no idea a couple years ago that things would be so cool right now.  I'm traveling, performing, making music videos, recording in Nashville with amazing producers, meeting other amazing artists and music industry people, and I'm realizing God has a plan for me.

Every time I get an instant message or email from a fan, it's special.  I've made great close friendships online through Twitter and SKYPE and Youtube and Facebook.  It's weird how the internet lets me have friends all over the world and how me just singing in the bathtub when I was younger kind of started a lot of this happening.

St. Louis - Six Flags October 2012
There are some fans (friends) who have shared some struggles they are going through and I have had the chance to pray with them and encourage them to hold on.  There's been fans that have done the same for me and with me.

Meeting people for the first time is awkward sometimes, but I know it's probably awkward for them too. It's like they see SPENCER KANE, this singer guy, and I really hope they just see Spencer, this teen guy who is just like them going to school, playing sports or other hobbies and hanging out with friends when they can.

Thank you for supporting me and believing in me. Your encouragement is what helps me know I'm moving in the right direction.

Food for the Hungry

On October 22, 2012, I will be leaving for a week to the Dominican Republic.  I will be traveling with The Rubyz and Rachel Chan as a guest of Food for the Hungry.  We will be visiting a few different orphanages each day that week and I will get to spend time with some kids that are not as privileged as we are here in the United States.

By the end of the week, I will have the opportunity to sponsor one of the orphans.  I am so excited about this trip because I have never been outside the United States and also because I actually love kids and hanging out with them.

I hope to post some great pics and hopefully some video from down there.  I hope everyone checks out Food for the Hungry and supports them.

All Indie Artist Awards 2013 - Nomination

Hey,

I received an email from the 2013 All Indie Music Awards organizers that said I've been nominated for a few different categories. In order to know which category I will possibly win, I need your votes. I was nominated this year and didn't win in February, but I know I got some great attention in Los Angeles, California where the award show took place in Hollywood.
